Welcome to Reef-Eden

Firstly, thank you for visiting. If this is your first time here, then I will take the opportunity to introduce myself.  My name is Simon Garratt and I am a UK reef keeper who has been keeping marine aquaria for the last 25 or so years. I am not a scientist, nor biologist and I have never claimed to be. What I am, is a hobbyist who has had more than his fair share of luck within this wonderful hobby. luck in terms of my own successes with reef tanks, and luck with regards to the fact that so many people seem to enjoy my ramblings both here, on various bulletin boards, at seminars, and over the last several years in various aquatic publications. I am for want of a better description someone who is blessed way beyond that which I feel I deserve.

I use the word 'luck' with caution though when it comes to running a reef tank. Yes, I believe luck definitely does play a big part in success or failure, but equally I think that you make your own to a certain degree in this hobby. Over the years I have come to realise that research, compassion and consideration for the animals we take from an already stressed wild environment, and effort on our part to understand nature and mimic its  many faces, are what 'make' a great reef tank. 'Luck' is what keeps it there. To that goal I decided to put Reef-Eden together as a tool for people to use either as a beginner or experienced reef keeper seeking further or more in-depth information. The information held here is what I feel has personally worked for me very successfully and many others. On top of that, 'and where applicable' I have also brought in information from outside that I feel represents either vital reading material or topics that will clear up issues that commonly cause confusion for many. What I will say now though if you are new to reef keeping, is that you should remember 1 simple fact. There are a million and one ways to run a reef system successfully, just the same as there are a million and one ways to fail. You can give the best reef keeper the worst system and he will still make it work, equally you can give the best system to the worst reef keeper and they will still fail. What makes a great 'reef keeper' is an eagerness to never stop learning, being open minded whilst being careful, and to be generous  enough to share both successes and admit failures to others, so that they may learn and avoid the same mistakes. To that goal I started Reef-Eden as a free resource that offers information to 'help' people improve not only their knowledge, but in some small way improve their 'luck' when it comes to running a reef tank over the long term. The net result and my strongest wish though, is that in some small way it improves the success rate and captive standards of some of the animals that are removed from the wild.

About the new site.

As part of the changes I have now split the site into several different areas. Clicking on an image below will take you onto the new main page for that area which will carry links to all subsequent pages. As such, unlike the old site, you wont have to click all the way back through pages to get back to where you started. Each individual page links back to the main parent page for that area.

At any time, If you click the Reef-Eden banner at the top of any page, It will take you strait back to here. so with that out of the way, please feel free to roam.

Please Note that thanks to the nice people who run the servers, the upgrade is taking longer than expected, so only certain sections are live at this point. The rest will be back on line very soon.
